Anarchist Civilization.

I've been doing a lot of reading lately, and the last two books I've read contained accounts of individuals who were, more or less, anarchists; Rebels who operated against their own society, and were exiled as a result. This exile was self-imposed, in both cases.

My question is this: Is the term "Anarchist Civilization" a contradiction in terms? Is it possible to build a society without a centralized system of governmental organization, while maintaining forward technological momentum? The American Heritage Dictionary contains several definitions for the word Civilization, but I think the variation which I am referring to is this one:
5. Modern society with its conveniences: returned to civilization after camping in the mountains.
If anyone has thoughts on this topic, please comment on this post. I'm better at asking questions than answering them, it seems.

Bwahahaha!

An actor who played a terrorist in one of the recent 9-11 movies was denied entry to the U.S. for the premiere.

Gates for President.

Bill Gates might be a corporate voicebox, an ego-hound and an asshole all rolled into one, but he'd probably make a better President than the one we've got.

I find this interesting.

Increasing numbers of retired generals and officers have begun to call for the resignation of Donald Rumsfeld in his role as the Secretary of Defense. Says Maj. Gen. Charles H. Swannack Jr.:
"...I do not believe Secretary Rumsfeld is the right person to fight that war based on his absolute failures in managing the war against Saddam in Iraq."

No active duty officers have joined the motion, due to reasons of solidarity and the fact that such a statement would be illegal under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. According to the New York Times:
"I support my secretary of defense," Lt. General John Vines, who commands the Army's 18th Airborne Corps, said when questioned after a speech in Washington on Thursday about the calls for Mr. Rumsfeld to step down. "If I publicly disagree with my civilian leadership, I think I've got to resign. My advice should be private."
